As bactérias úteis convertem o amónio em nitrato através do nitrito. O nitrito, o intermediário da decomposição dos poluentes, é um forte veneno para o sangue que muitas vezes se acumula em aquários recém-instalados. Utilizando o teste de nitrito da sera, é fácil determinar o nível de nitrito tóxico. Num aquário com um filtro biológico que funcione bem, o nível de nitrito deve ser 0.
