The Aqua Medic EVO 501 is a motor driven, adjustable internal protein skimmer with controller for marine water aquaria up to 250 litres of water. The venturi pump draws water out of the aquarium or filter chamber, mixes it with air in the pump housing which is then cut into small air bubbles by the Aqua Medic 3D needle wheel. This water/air mixture is then pumped into the reaction pipe where organic substances are taken up by air bubbles.

Protein skimmers are used in marine aquariums to remove pollutants and relieve the filter. As pure skimmers or in combination with an ozone generator, protein skimmers are very effective devices for removing organic excretions, pollutants or an excess of nutrients in the water. During skimming, the pollutants are attached to the air bubbles generated by the pump in the reaction tube. Due to the special design of the reaction tube, the air bubbles have a long dwell time in the water, allowing many molecules to attach themselves to the air bubbles. The air bubbles rise to the top and collect as foam in the foam pot. There are air-driven and motor-driven skimmers. Models for smaller aquariums are used directly in the tank as internal skimmers, whereas external skimmers are installed in the base cabinet inside or outside the filter tank.
