Gravel/Substrate Aquarium

Plan the substrate before setting up the aquarium. Calculate the required quantity from the tank base, desired layer depth and shape of the layout, allowing additional material for slopes or raised areas. Check whether the product should be rinsed and whether it is used alone or as part of a layered substrate system.

The needs of the livestock are equally important. Sharp or coarse material may be unsuitable for fish that search or rest on the bottom, while very fine sand can require different maintenance from open gravel. Active soil should be chosen with the intended water values and replacement interval in mind. During cleaning, avoid disturbing nutrient layers or removing excessive amounts of fine substrate.
