Aquarium filter media perform different mechanical, biological or specialised chemical tasks. Sponges, pads and floss trap particles; porous media provide colonisation surfaces; activated carbon, adsorbers and other specialist products are used for defined purposes and periods.

Select media according to the filter, water path and actual requirement. Dimensions, pore size and grain size must fit the available basket or chamber without blocking flow. Not every aquarium requires every type of medium, and specialist media should be used according to their instructions.
