External Filters Aquarium | Which external filter for my Aquarium?

External aquarium filters are installed outside the tank and provide space for several types of filter media. Models differ in flow rate, canister volume, number of media baskets, hose diameter, energy consumption and additional equipment. The appropriate filter depends on aquarium volume, stocking level, desired water movement and the resistance created by hoses and media.

Manufacturer aquarium-size recommendations provide a starting point, but actual flow is lower once the filter is filled and connected. Long hoses, height differences, clogged media and narrow fittings can reduce circulation. Check the stated flow rate, maximum head, canister dimensions and the space available in the aquarium cabinet.

Priming aids, prefilters, flow controls, integrated heaters and electronic functions are available on selected models only. Compare the supplied media, hoses, taps and intake and outlet parts before ordering. Replacement seals, impellers and filter media should also be available for the chosen model.
